Very cheap eats: Taj Tandoori

Around the corner from the Classic cinema at 281 Glenhuntly Rd Elsternwick this very well presented Indian restaurant doesn’t look like it would qualify for VCE but it is remarkably inexpensive.

Not only do the have mains for around $12 but they also offer a $20 Banquet! Take away is, of course, even cheaper. Desserts are about $9

The place is spic and span – even the laminated menus look completely fresh.

Service is prompt and obliging.

Serves are standard size comming in brass handled small metal pots. As with almost all Indian food the dishes themselves are quite colourful though not very photogenic. We actually had a more expensive banquet and as a result tasted more dishes.

They use a lot of sweetener – possibly sugar and this dominated several dishes including the Raita

We began with a small tray of dips – mint, mango and pomegranateThis was followed by some Tandoori chicken and samosa A mixed vegetable dish was so overcooked the veggies flopped around – most unattractive If there had been any heat sensitive goodness it must have long disappeared
The prawn masala would have a diabetic reach for his glucometer. The other dishes were pleasant enough but totally undistinguished with the exception of the the Gulab Jamon and the Kulfi both of which were excellent but be aware that the texture of kulfi is not at all like ice cream!
